Chevy Colorado Towing Capacity

The Chevrolet Colorado is a solid, all-purpose truck. From off-road exploring to towing and hauling to carting around friends and family, this truck can do it all for Wexford, Pittsburgh, and Cranberry Township drivers.

However, if you need your new truck for trailering, you may be wondering what this vehicle can handle. What is the Chevrolet Colorado towing capacity? It can pull up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped, but the figures you’ll see depend on the configuration you choose. Baierl Chevrolet will give you the complete breakdown below!

You can choose from three engine options in the Chevy Colorado, and each one has different max towing capabilities. The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder that kicks out 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. It’ll let you tow up to 3,500 pounds—perfect for moving a utility trailer or a couple of jet skis.

The Colorado’s available 3.6L V6 yields 308 horsepower, 275 lb-ft of torque, and a towing capacity of up to 7,000 pounds. That’s double what the base engine can do, offering enough pulling power to move some recreational boats and small hard-side RVs.

However, the true towing machine is the Chevrolet Colorado 2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel, which generates 181 horsepower and a massive 369 lb-ft of torque. Torque is great for towing, and this engine has the best trailering capability of the bunch at up to 7,700 pounds. Hitch up a lightweight camping trailer and see what it can do!

With how advanced pickup truck engines are these days, there’s no reason why hauling all your gear should guzzle gas. The 2020 Chevy Colorado was designed to balance high towing power with fuel efficiency.

With your standard truck engine, the 2.5L 4-cylinder, you maintain an EPA-estimated 20 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. Fortunately, if you upgrade to the brawnier V6 engine option, that mileage will only drop by a couple MPG.

We know what you’re thinking now: if you upgrade to the most powerful hauling engine, the 2.8L Duramax®, you’ll have to sacrifice gas mileage. Well, we’ve got great news—this is the most efficient choice out of the three!

Thanks to its efficient turbo-diesel power, the 2.8L Duramax® powertrain maintains an EPA-estimated 30 MPG highway.

When it comes to towing, the Chevy Colorado offers several features—some standard and some as options—that make your towing experience easier and more convenient. They include:

Hill Descent Control, which uses anti-lock brakes to help control your speed as you descend from hills.

Tow/Haul Mode, which alters transmission upshift/downshift points to control acceleration and braking.

Trailering Package, including a 2-inch receiver hitch, 4-pin and 7-pin connectors, and an automatic locking rear differential.

Safety is of the utmost importance when you set out for a long haul with your boat or camper. The Chevy Colorado offers an available suite of driver-assisting technologies to keep you aware and safer during your trip.

  • Standard Rear Vision Camera: Reverse maneuvers are even trickier when you’re hauling. The Rear Vision Camera comes standard to provide a view of what’s behind your truck on the infotainment display. Dynamic guidelines will show you what course you’re on while in reverse.
  • Available Forward Collision Alert: A quick distraction is all it might take to cause a front-end collision. This optional feature alerts you if it determines that a frontal accident is imminent.
  • Available Lane Departure Warning: By using cameras, this feature can read the road markings to determine what lane you’re in. If you start to drift off (without using your turn signal), your truck will alert you.
  • Available Rear Park Assist: Need a little assistance with parking? This optional feature shows you the distance to objects behind you when you’re sliding into your spot.

The big road trip out to your lake house or to the beach might be a long one. To keep things interesting during the long haul, the Chevy Colorado provides plenty of infotainment features to keep you connected.

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System is your total media hub throughout the trip. Integrate your phone into the truck using either Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™, and you’ll be able to access your music, podcasts, and audiobooks right from the central touchscreen.

A couple extra features are available to keep you connected to the internet, including the 4G LTE Wi-Fi® Hotspot. Streaming content on the go is a cinch with the hotspot enabled. You can then charge up your phone with available wireless charging to keep your devices fully charged.

There are a few tips we want to share with you to make your towing experience as successful and safe as possible. When you’re on the road, it’s important to apply gradual pressure on the gas pedal to avoid overworking your engine.

You’ll want to give yourself extra time and space to merge onto highways as well—and plenty of room to come to a safe stop. It’s always a good idea to leave one vehicle length and trailer length between you and the vehicle in front of you for every 10 MPH of speed, so you have time and space to brake firmly and steadily if needed.

As for trailer sway? Keeping your trailer stable is always a primary concern. If you notice your trailer swaying, don’t panic. Also, don’t try to steer out of it or brake too harshly since that will likely worsen the problem or cause trailer swing. Instead, focus on slowly and steadily slowing the vehicle down.
